Signal Basics
Disclaimer: Following the instructions below do not totally ensure that your conversation is private/safe. An in-person conversation between vetted individuals is the most secure form of communication.
Below the written instructions, an image of the Signal security settings are provided.
Downloading the Application
Signal is available in both the Apple and Android app stores. Ensure that you are downloading the application that is written by "Signal Messenger, LLC." on Apple devices and "Signal Foundation" on Android devices.
Signal can be installed on Desktop computers (Mac, Windows, Linux) as well. The scope of these security instructions will be limited to the native mobile apps. Before installing the application, read the General Signal Guidelines, and then set up your account.
General Signal Guidelines
- Don't use your real full name. A nickname is better.
- Don't send anything you don't want read back to you in court.
- Have in-person conversations as often as reasonable.
- If you're in a group chat with people you don't know well, assume it is not secure.
- If a group member is arrested or their phone is confiscated, notify an admin immediately so they can be removed from chats.
- Delete sensitive messages for everybody-- this must be done within 24 hours. After that, messages can only be deleted for you, not for others.
Signal Settings
After installing the application, several menu items allow you to configure settings. Security settings are explained by the menu item. The labels will likely change as the app is updated- we will attempt to keep this page accurate.
The settings may make the application more difficult to use (in some respects) but much more secure.
Accounts
In the Settings (gear icon), locate the "Accounts" menu item.
- "Registration Lock": ON
Chats
Within the "Chats" menu, set the following items:
- "Generate link previews": OFF
- "Share contacts with OS": OFF
Notifications
Within the "Notifications", set:
- "Show: No name or content" (very important)
Keyboard
On Android devices only, within the "Keyboard" set:
- Incognito keyboard: ON
Privacy
Consider all "Privacy" settings as very important.
- Phone number:
- Who can see my number: NOBODY
- Disappearing messages: Set a default time period. (The shorter the better. These can be set per chat discussion.)
- Hide screen in App Switcher: ON
- Screen lock: ON
- Screen lock timeout: SHORT
- Biometrics: DISABLED (Essential for high-risk activity. If left enabled, your application could be unlocked by someone else holding your device up to your face)
- Advanced:
- Always relay calls: ON (This will act as a form of VPN, better cloaking your precise location)
Phone-level Settings
n addition to Signal-specific settings, there are settings on your Apple or Android device that should be carefully considered.
- Set a strong password
- Consider disabling biometric options to log into your device
- Disable or refine what data is backed up to the cloud.
- Alternatively, ensure that what is being backed up is secured
