Protect the Vote - Pick Your Role

This next sentence is going to feel hyperbolic, but: Everything is at risk in this upcoming election, and we need your help more so than ever.

Who would have thought that "saving democracy" was going to take so much effort and put us into what may be uncomfortable positions? Oh. You did? Well, good for you.

As a battleground state, with so much at stake, we are all going to have to do even more. Below is a list of roles and related resources that Indivisible has collected. Please carefully review the list of roles below and pick one.

Please let us know what you decide to do and whether we can do anything to support you. For example, maybe you want to do a training with someone. We can try to connect you. Or, maybe you are doing an in-person event but need a lift. Or maybe you have a hyper-local "Ride to the Polls" idea, but gas is super pricey. Etc, etc. We got you. Please note: Statewide Early Voting runs October 24 – November 1. Election Day is November

Promote the Vote Fund

Be our eyes and ears on the ground. Stationed at polling places, early voting sites, and absentee counting boards to make sure eligible voters can cast their ballots free from interference and intimidation.

• Early Voting: 1 to 2 shifts of 4 hours each
• Election Day: 1 shift of 4 to 6 hours

Your Local Clerk's Office

Paid, trained election volunteers appointed by their local clerk to help run polling locations — checking in voters, verifying registrations, and keeping the process running smoothly and fairly. Must be a registered Michigan voter.

Early Voting: Optional shifts available

Election Day: Full day commitment, typically 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM - paid stipend provided

Common Cause Michigan

Observe and document polling place operations - monitoring voter flow, accessibility issues, long lines, and procedures - and report any concerns to election officials or election protection organizations. This is an observe-and-report role only.

• Early Voting: 1 to 2 shifts of 2 to 4 hours
• Election Day: 1 shift of 2 to 4 hours

VAAC - Voting Access for All Coalition (Detroit area only)

Help make sure every eligible voter can actually get to the polls. Volunteer drivers provide rides to and from polling locations during early voting and on Election Day. No special training required - just a valid driver's license and a reliable vehicle.

• Early Voting: Flexible shifts based on your availability
• Election Day: Flexible shifts of 2 to 4 hours

As our partner organizations introduce Ride to the Polls opportunities in other communities across Michigan, we will notify all EDC members with sign up details. More opportunities are coming!

ACLU of Michigan

Help voters fix technical errors on their absentee ballots - like a missing or mismatched signature - that would otherwise cause their vote to be rejected and not counted. You will notify voters of flagged ballots and guide them through the correction process before the deadline.

• Pre-Election Day: Most work happens in the days immediately following Election Day through certification — expect 2 to 4 hour shifts over several days
• Election Day and Beyond: Ongoing through ballot certification

League of Women Voters of Michigan via Promote the Vote Fund

Trained volunteers placed inside county canvassing rooms after Election Day to monitor the official certification of every ballot cast — absentee, provisional, and Election Day votes. Observers are nonpartisan, do not interfere with the process, and document and report any irregularities through proper channels.

• Pre-Election: Training required — approximately 2 hours
• Post-Election Day: Shifts inside canvassing rooms November 4th through November 14th - expect 4 to 6 hour shifts

Staff the nonpartisan Election Protection Hotline — a virtual opportunity to help Michigan voters troubleshoot issues at the polls in real time. Two training sessions required before your first shift.
